Agarwood Farming NC I – Core Units

Core Unit 1: Assist in Agarwood Nursery Operations

Unit Descriptor: Assist in sowing seeds, seedling care, watering, shading, and sanitation under supervision.
Performance Criteria:

  1. Identify seedling types and planting materials correctly.
  2. Prepare nursery tools and materials appropriately.
  3. Carry out sowing and seedling care according to instructions.
  4. Perform watering, shading, and sanitation properly.
  5. Observe hygiene and biosecurity protocols.
    Range of Variables: Seeds, seedlings, containers, shading materials, watering tools.
    Evidence Guide: Observation, checklist, portfolio of nursery activities.

Core Unit 2: Assist in Plantation Establishment

Unit Descriptor: Assist in land preparation, layout, planting, mulching, and soil care.
Performance Criteria:

  1. Assist in clearing and preparing land safely.
  2. Help layout planting rows according to guidelines.
  3. Assist in planting seedlings properly.
  4. Apply mulching and basic soil care under supervision.
  5. Follow environmental protection and safety guidelines.
    Range of Variables: Tools, seedlings, mulching materials, soil amendments.
    Evidence Guide: Observation, practical demonstration, checklist.

Core Unit 3: Perform Basic Farm Maintenance

Unit Descriptor: Perform weeding, pruning, cleaning, pest/disease identification, and sanitation.
Performance Criteria:

  1. Carry out manual weeding and removal of debris.
  2. Assist in basic pruning tasks safely.
  3. Apply organic inputs under instruction.
  4. Identify common pests/diseases and report accordingly.
  5. Maintain cleanliness and order in the farm.
    Range of Variables: Tools, organic inputs, pruning materials.
    Evidence Guide: Observation, logbook entries, practical demonstration.

Core Unit 4: Assist in Harvesting and Handling

Unit Descriptor: Assist in safe cutting, collection, sorting, cleaning, and drying of agarwood.
Performance Criteria:

  1. Follow safety procedures during cutting and collection.
  2. Sort agarwood according to basic categories.
  3. Perform cleaning and drying under supervision.
  4. Handle materials safely to prevent contamination or loss.
  5. Record harvesting activities appropriately.
    Range of Variables: Cutting tools, storage containers, drying racks.
    Evidence Guide: Observation, checklist, harvested sample records.

Core Unit 5: Observe Environmental Compliance and Farm Ethics

Unit Descriptor: Observe legal, ethical, and environmental requirements in farm operations.
Performance Criteria:

  1. Follow DENR rules and farm permits.
  2. Practice proper waste management.
  3. Respect biodiversity and protected species.
  4. Adhere to ethical and cultural guidelines in handling agarwood.
  5. Maintain basic farm records and reporting.
