5.3 Chip grading, resin classification & oil distillation

From Tree to Premium Product – Quality Verified at Every Step

1. Chip Grading

Purpose:

  • Determine quality, size, and resin content of agarwood chips for pricing, processing, and batch creation.
  • Ensure uniformity within batches for buyers and distillation.

Grading Criteria:

GradeDescriptionTypical Use
AHigh resin content, dark color, heavyPremium chips, perfumery & essential oil
BMedium resin content, medium-dark colorMid-grade products, mixed batches
CLow resin content, light colorLower-grade, fillers, or experimental extraction

Farmer-Friendly Tips:

  • Use simple visual inspection and hand-feel for preliminary sorting
  • Record chip weight, tree ID, and batch ID for traceability
  • Combine photographs with grading notes for quality documentation

2. Resin Classification

Purpose:

  • Determine resin type and quality for pricing and extraction potential
  • Ensure traceable documentation from tree → batch → buyer

Classification Parameters:

CategoryDescriptionNotes
Gold / High-Grade ResinDark, aromatic, highly denseFetches premium prices
Silver / Medium ResinMedium density, aromaticStandard perfumery use
Bronze / Low-Grade ResinLight, less aromaticMay be blended or used for oil extraction

Data to Record:

  • Tree ID / Batch ID
  • Weight of resin harvested
  • Grade category
  • Photos or video for verification
  • Harvest date and operator

3. Oil Distillation

Purpose:

  • Extract agarwood essential oil from chips or resin for perfumery, aromatherapy, or premium markets.
  • Maintain traceability from batch to final oil product.

Key Steps & Data Points:

StepData to RecordNotes
Input MaterialBatch ID, UTIDs, chip grade, resin grade, weightEnsures traceable oil
Distillation TypeHydrodistillation, steam, or supercritical CO₂Record method & duration
Process ParametersTemperature, pressure, duration, yieldSupports quality control
OutputOil weight, density, color, aroma profileAssign new oil batch ID
Operator & DatePerson responsible, start/end timesAccountability & compliance
Storage & QRContainer ID, storage location, QR codeEnsures chain-of-custody and traceability

Farmer-Friendly Tip:

  • If not performing distillation on-farm, link harvested chips/resin batch ID to processing facility record for traceability.
  • Ensure all oil batches are traceable to original tree UTIDs and chip/resin batch.

4. Integration with Traceability System

Workflow Example:

Tree UTID → Harvest → Batch ID → Chip Grade → Resin Grade → Oil Batch → QR / Blockchain → Buyer Verification
  • Each step is recorded, verified, and linked to previous steps
  • Enables premium pricing for traceable, high-quality products
  • Provides audit-ready data for CITES, DENR, and international buyers

5. Benefits

  • Buyer Confidence: Verified quality and origin
  • Premium Pricing: Traceable A-grade chips and gold resin fetch top prices
  • Fraud Prevention: Prevents substitution and mislabeling
  • Operational Efficiency: Streamlines processing, distillation, and inventory
  • Compliance: Supports export, CITES, and blockchain traceability
